Mathew was born in Butts parish, Kilkenny, Ireland in 1807. At present, confirmation of his parents has been unsuccessful. In 1826, he married Margaret Williams at St Mary's Church in Kilkenny. The following year he joined the military at the age of twenty. He received an on-the-job injury and was forced to retire at age 41. We believe the potato famine prompted the family to move to Liverpool, England. The 1861 census shows Matt and Margaret living in Liverpool while the 1881 census show Matt as a widower. No date of death has been found.

Margaret was born to Richard and Briget Williams on December 16, 1808. She married Mathew Bryan who was from the same parish. She had atleast 2 children, Mary born in 1831 and John born in 1840. She died while living in Liverpool beteen 1861 and 1881.
