Corrigan Clan

Corrigan family crest

The Corrigan surname is of Irish origin and means a "Spear" in Gaelic.

A Corrigan Coat of Arms motto is: Consilio et Impetu (English: By counsel and Force).

In the 1659 census Corrigan and O’Corrigan are among the more numerous Irish names in Offaly, Longford, and Fermanagh. Religion in Ireland has tettered back and forth from Catholic and Protestan since the 1500s staring with Henry VIII. The 1699 Acts by England restricting Irish woollen exports crippled the industry and prompted the start of Scotch-Irish exodus to America. A hundred years later, the United Irishmen staged an insurrection in Ireland, with the objective of establishing an independent Irish republic. The rebellion was crushed and full parliamentary Union with Britain was passed in 1800. At some point between 1826 and 1838, our Corrigan ancesters arrived in Canada. Eventually, three siblings - Robert, Matilda and Johnston all settled in the Inkerman area south of Ottawa.
