Johannes' dad was born in Germany and immigrated to the US. His mother was from Schoharie Co., New York. After the War for Independence in 1783, his parent immigrated to Canada as well as the Koch family.
John married Elizabeth Cook, daughter to Mickle/Michael Cook, of Williamsburg on 12 November 1815. On Monday 8 th November 1824, John Pillar, innkeeper of Montreal, province of Lower Canada, bought lot #4 in the 3rd concession of Williamsburg township, Dundas County, Ontario for the sum of 500 pounds from John Wood. The 9th October 1833 he applied for a Crown Grant of Land and therein he swore that he had "never received any Lands or order for Lands from the Crown" and prayed that he be granted 200 acres. He signed it in two places by an X indicating he could neither read nor write. Whether he was successful or not is unknown. He served in the War of 1812-14. He died at Russell, Ontario 3 July 1885 and is buried there.
