Hiram came from a large family of 16 that farmed in Russell, Ontario
The earliest burial in this cemetery was Nehemiah Pillar in 1851, infant of Hiram Pillar (1821-1904) and Mary Charlotte Holmes (1814-1890). The Pillar family is one of the earliest pioneer settlers in the area. The photo below shows Hiram’s younger brother, Abraham Pillar (1835-1926), standing in the Pillar family plot with St. Paul’s Methodist (brick) church in the background.
Hirem died in 1904 with Robert Corrigan signing the return on the death certificate.
There is gentle humor in the entry of her data to the where she is entered as 'May I. PILLER'
She was my GG Grandmother, and I think she must have passed that phrase 'May I.' down through the generations as I clearly recall my own Mother, her G Grandchild correcting us when we asked 'Can I...' ... and she would replay 'May I...' and give a decision ... often '
